Dental implants are the best tooth replacement option out there. Since they replace the roots of the missing teeth, they allow for a wide range of benefits that you can’t get with dentures or dental bridges. To achieve this, getting dental implants requires a multi-step process, including a surgical procedure. Here are the answers to some of the most common questions patients ask about their procedure and post-op.
Can I Drive Home After My Dental Implant Surgery?
If you were sedated during your dental implant surgery, it takes some time for you to be completely alert after you wake up. You might experience some blurred vision and lack of coordination. Because of this, you should plan for a trusted friend or family member to take you home from your appointment. Avoid driving or operating machinery for the first 24 hours after surgery.
What If the Surgical Site Is Bleeding?
It is common for there to be some blood from the site after having your dental implants placed. This may occur for up to 48 to 72 hours following surgery. Bite down firmly on the gauze sponges that have been placed to reduce bleeding. Avoid spitting and rinsing because this can aggravate the area, stimulating bleeding.
How Long Do I Need to Wait Before Eating?
About an hour after your surgery, you can remove the gauze sponges and have a bite to eat. Be sure to stick to soft foods for the first 24 hours, avoid hot foods and beverages, and don’t drink from a straw. This will give your mouth the best chance of healing properly.
Will My Recovery Time Be Painful?
The amount of discomfort that you feel after surgery depends on how extensive it was. Take your prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication as directed. If the pain seems to be getting worse after 5 to 7 days instead of improving, let your oral surgeon know so they can help.
Why Do I Need to Take Antibiotics?
Dental implant placement surgery requires antibiotic treatment. They are used to prevent infections around the implant and/or bone graft. You should follow the dosage directions on the bottle and take the medication until it is finished.
After your dental implant placement surgery, closely follow the instructions from your oral surgeon. You will be showing off a beautiful, complete smile in no time.
