What is BOTOX®?

Wrinkles and fine lines can form on your face over the years as a result of the unconscious movements of certain muscles. BOTOX® is meant to help put a stop to these movements, thus resulting in smoother-looking skin.

How does BOTOX® work? It makes use of botulinum toxin, which has properties that can prevent the nerves from sending signals to the muscles. This results in less of the muscle activity that contributes to wrinkles. It can take a few days for the effects of BOTOX® to kick in, and the results can generally last a few months before the treatment needs to be redone.

Who is a Good Candidate for BOTOX®?

BOTOX® tends to work best on dynamic wrinkles – that is, wrinkles that are the direct result of muscle movement. Some common examples of wrinkles and fine lines that can be addressed with BOTOX® include:

  • Wrinkles around the eyes, commonly known as crow’s feet.
  • Wrinkles on the forehead or lines between the eyebrows.
  • Smoker’s lines, which are vertical lines that form around the mouth.

You may not be able to tell just by looking whether BOTOX® is a viable option for dealing with your specific kinds of wrinkles. Additionally, you may not be eligible for BOTOX® if you’re pregnant or have deep scars on your face. As such, the first step of the BOTOX® process is to pay our office a visit; we can figure out whether the treatment is right for you by taking a close look at your face and considering your unique circumstances.

BOTOX® FAQs

Is BOTOX Safe?

BOTOX uses small doses of botulinum toxin that are not concentrated enough to produce negative effects, and some research suggests that cosmetic uses of this treatment may be less risky than medical applications because the doses used are especially miniscule. It’s more likely for a patient to experience adverse effects if their BOTOX treatment is not performed by a qualified provider, and the team at Northern Virginia Oral, Maxillofacial & Implant Surgery includes experienced board-certified oral surgeons who are meticulously attentive to detail. In the first fourteen years after BOTOX was approved by the FDA, only 36 adverse reactions were reported, and most of these were due to underlying medical conditions rather than the treatments themselves.

Is BOTOX Permanent?

The results of BOTOX treatment are temporary because the human body will break down the botulinum toxin protein over time, and the longevity of your results will depend on factors such as your age, metabolism, exercise habits, and exposure to toxins in your environment. The results of most treatments last about three months, but they can last up to six for some patients and the treatment can be repeated as many times as desired. The temporary nature of BOTOX treatment actually makes it especially safe because it allows providers to monitor the intensity of effects and adjust future doses accordingly, which helps prevent adverse reactions and lingering health consequences.

How Can I Preserve the Results of My BOTOX Treatment?

The following tips may help the results of your BOTOX treatment last longer:

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure: BOTOX cannot address wrinkles caused by sun damage, and solar radiation can accelerate the breakdown of the botulinum toxin protein. Be sure to wear sunscreen and stick to the shade when possible when outdoors.
  • Enjoy lower-intensity workouts: Physical activity can accelerate the decay of the botulinum toxin protein. Opting for less intensive exercise after receiving BOTOX may help maintain your results.
  • Manage your stress: Excessive anxiety can lead to the formation of new wrinkles and accelerate the rate at which the botulinum toxin protein breaks down.
  • Use moisturizer: Products containing collagen and hyaluronic acid can help your skin stay soft, hydrated, and full and help reduce the rate at which the BOTOX protein breaks down.
  • Abstain from nicotine: Tobacco and other nicotine products can accelerate the breakdown of your collagen as well as the BOTOX protein. To make matters worse, smoking can cause fine wrinkles that BOTOX cannot fix.
  • Use a zinc supplement: One study in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology found that 90 percent of people who took a 50-milligram zinc supplement after BOTOX treatment enjoyed results that lasted 30% longer.

What Happens if I Stop BOTOX Injections?

If you stop receiving BOTOX treatments to maintain your results, the wrinkles the injections concealed will reappear. Other than that, the treatment has no lingering side effects, and it can actually prevent the formation of new wrinkles while its effects last. It is perfectly safe to discontinue BOTOX treatments at any time and to resume them at any later time if so desired.
